THE Marina Village plan presents an opportunity to breathe new life into this key area, creating a vibrant community and providing new housing in the heart of the town near to centres of education, major employers and local shops and businesses and changing perceptions of Barrow as a place to live.
Once the complex remediation work is complete, high quality mixed homes will sit side by side with wildlife habitats – all closely located to BAE Systems Ltd and the new Brilliant Barrow University of Cumbria Campus.
Market research has provided confirmation that there is a demand for the housing on the site.
There is also clear interest from the private sector to bring forward the site for housing, from both local and regional developers.
Work on the first six hectares of the site – Phase 1 – is now completed thanks to funding of £5.5 million secured from the Government’s Getting Building Fund, administered by Cumbria LEP. This will pave the way for some 214 homes to be delivered.
#BrilliantBarrow funding will cover further work as part of Phase II, preparing land to be released for the development of additional homes by the private sector, bringing the total number of new homes available on site to 808.
